I like her ... ( 4 months ago by vegetasrevenge)
I like her improvisations, and Kieth Jarret too.
But why pay Ascap and or BMI their copyright by using the melody or title of a song when that melody is hardly, or needlesly quoted?
I went to Mimi's website and learned some stuff. She is a good teacher and player.
I watched some of her other vids too and this one is just not her best.
I think what he was ... ( 4 months ago by vegetasrevenge)
I think what he was getting at is that the locrian mode is the most obvious and most dull sound to use over a minor seven flat five chord, which is realy a ninth chord and can be treated as such by using the melodic minor scale, blah blah blah. It's all a bunch of boring theory, which all guitarists should know so they can feel they are better than the next one.
Hahaha, I ... ( 3 months ago by NickieNes)
Hahaha, I completely agree with you about the theory. It seems that most sub-pro musicians throw out a bunch of theory jargon when talking to another musician. It's almost like a competition to see who can confuse the other first, when really they're talking about the same thing.
Don't get me wrong ... ( 3 months ago by vegetasrevenge)
Don't get me wrong here, I think the study of even the most mundane music theory is vital to a better understanding of music and your instrument, but infinitely more important for communication. However it does become a pissing contest a lot of the times. Because we all work so hard and see so little reward monetarily. We don't like seeing talent go to waste and we don't like people with minimal talents that make it big, mostly in pop music. Musical brainwashing has made public opinion useless.

Not quite sure what ... ( 2 months ago by lexo30)
Not quite sure what you mean by 'hardly or needlessly quoted'. She quotes the tune at the top, then does a longish improvised bit, then starting around 1.22 she is definitely playing the tune, albeit slighty modified, and improvising over those changes. Very nice player. Interesting choice of tune - I associate it more with Dixieland and trad jazz than with someone playing at her level of sophistication. Not sure it's a good choice for her, but what do I know...

you can say that ... ( 1 month ago by australiaisgood)
you can say that but most people dont have the time or patience to dedicate themselves to understand music like jazz, i dont have a problem with the general public enjoying pop music i think its great that music can be so universal and freely enjoyed. i think its sad when musicians jump on their high horse and look down upon the pop loving masses haha.. i think most people that play jazz do it because they love it, not for the money and although it would be nice to be better rewarded
(continueing my ... ( 1 month ago by australiaisgood)
(continueing my reply for comment below) i think it would destroy the reasons for loving jazz if it was as well paid as pop because people would get into it for the money rather than a love of creating/performing music and i dont want to see that happen. its not the fact that i dont want jazz to be mainstream, i just like knowing that musicians spend countless hours practicing for their enjoyment... anyway probably went off on a tangent then but i just started typing haha

I found out that you first need to learn HOW to practise, I've been playing now for about 39 years and just started to understand this secret. So you completely stopped playing?

I guess this was a reply to me, since i got a note in my email. That's an intriguing point about practicing. I think you're right, but I'm still not sure how to practice. I stopped playing for about 15 years, during which I only picked up the guitar occasionally!! I restarted about a year ago now. I'm trying to focus on ear training much more these days. But I get frustrated and feel like I just can't improve sometimes.
