What's weird is that this movie has both the saddest scene I've ever seen, Brooks Was Here and has the happiest scene ever, which is the ending. Which is what makes it so damn good.

A sad end to an old man who found his place in prison. He shoulda shot his nasty supervisor to get back to Shawshank. He's been in the pen for over 50 years, more than half his life, and society gives him no sympathy, just treats him like dirt. Of course, just like how it wouldn't help for Andy to explain to Bogs he was not homosexual, Brooks' unlikable boss wouldn't give a shit if he explained he was arthritic in both hands.
By the way, a scripted/cut scene had Andy finding the bird's body.
