Jill Trenary moved to 1st overall at the 1989 Worlds after her combined 2nd in compulsory figures and 2nd in the short program. Of note, she would keep this same short program for the 1989-90 season.

This is an awesome program! As a HUGE fan back in the late 80's early 90's Jill was always gracious to her fan and would reply to fan mail. She even sent a SUPER COOL autographed picture of her on the podium stand at 90 World.

Not ALL of the music selections were horrible back then, just Jill's. The lp is even worse...

"In the Wee Small Hours" by Sadao Watanabe, "Headed for the Future", by Neil Diamond and "Winter Games" by David Foster is what she skated to

IMO Jill had GREAT musical selections. The long is a classical piece I have never heard before or since. This short has great music. Don't know what you are listening to kwadruple????

Hmmm...I thought she was a lovely skater and I'm glad she was nice to her fans. But watching her again, there's lots of problems. She waited almost eighty seconds before landing a jump (triple toe, the easiest)and her choreography before the jumping passes was boring. Her death drop was also unimpressive and she traveled all over the ice during her spins (some of them were downright sloppy).

I don't think that it was necessarily a detriment to put the jump combination later into the program. She did check off 2 program requirements (layback, spiral seq) before going into the combo. She paced herself wonderfully. She did play it safe by doing 3toe, but when you factor in the compulsories, she was light years ahead of the rest of the pack and was probably thinking more strategically about her overall placements.

I agree with Skaterdude. The selection may have been diverse, but the mixing and transitions were seamless and, if anyone could do it, Jill pulled it off. Keep in mind, this was 1989!

I agree that her flying spin was nothing special but who cares if it took her 80 seconds before attemping her first jump? The longer you wait, the more tired you are, so waiting actually increased the difficulty.

Jill had the same great program in 1990 and used a flying camel which was a better spin for her. The program was difficult as any as far as element besides the triple toe. Although of everyone who ever has negative comments about any skater I am wondering if they have ever even skated. As a former competitive adult skater, none of the elements are as easy as they seem.

I agree, Jill always had very good selections, which made her so crowd appealing, and she really skated to the music well and used the strength she did have.

I am sorry to be a party pooper, but I think she ranks as one of the most boring skaters ever...Wedged between the Debi/Katarina battle and then the US sweep in 91, it's like she really wasn't that big of a deal anyway. And I think her world title is a joke when you compare her performances to Ito's.
