Frey lied to Oprah's viewers when he said his book was a memoir and she had every right to ask him tough questions. I wish more people in media would ask tough questions and hold liars accountable. Oprah deserves the pulitzer prize for demanding and getting the truth for her audience. Nan Talese deserved her grilling too because she did not do anything to verify the book's authenticity.

i read the book it was a good STORY , but thats not the point. The point is that Oprah turned on the guy because she was afraid to loose her precious viewers, she didnt give a shit if the story was entirely true or not , what she cares more about are the opinions of the mindless drones that build her empire.

How REAL is Operah?
She should look at herself in the mirror and ask that.
Pretending to be 'the average women', but living in one of her many mansions with her butlers and fleet of cars, private jets.
I am yet to meet somebody who watches her show. I am however an Englishman living in Australia. Maybe its huge in the States.
Anyway. Its a great book. Fuck Oprah and her horse head!

I don't understand ...( 3 months ago by vittykorn)
I don't understand what nan Talese is saying. That it's okay to lie to millions of people to make money? That the media has no right to ask tough questions and demand the truth? Talese is just trying to save face because she was exposed as a poor publisher. At least Oprah had the courage to admit she was wrong and to demand the truth face to face on live TV. I think the media & the publishing industry should be demanding higher standard for truth, not watering the standards down.

Geez the sun will always shine out of Oprah's arse to people like you eh vittykorn. Talese makes a very good point on Oprah's sickening 'holier than thou' disposition that airheads like yourself lap up.
Talese is well spoken and rational in a way that Oprah isn't. It would have been good if Oprah had have allowed reasonable discourse with her on the show, but, like Talese pointed out, all Oprah Winfrey cared about was protecting her image.
Talese isn't saying ...( 3 months ago by idroppedoutofcollege)
Talese isn't saying it's okay to lie, or that there shouldn't have been consequences for Frey's lack of veracity. I think she was alluding to the hypocrisy of Oprah claiming to care so much about truth and wanting to do a show on it but then ambushing her and Frey in a vitriolic, melodramatic and irrational manner.
And as for Talese being a poor publisher, yeah right. She's one of the most accomplished and successful out there who happened to believe an extremely convincing falsified memoir.
I disagree. Talese ...( 3 months ago by vittykorn)
I disagree. Talese has no integrity. She wants to dance on the split of a hair about the definition of a memoir rather than have the honesty to admit she misclassified the book. Oprah's a straight shooter who can admit she made a mistake & had the courage to confront the people who lied to her on live TV. Talese is not rational, she's like a bad politician trying to rationalize her mistakes rather than taking responsibility for them. I can't respect her when she has no respect for the truth.
Nothing ...( 3 months ago by vittykorn)
Nothing hypocritical, irrational, or vitriolic about Oprah asking tough questions. Do they think they are above being questioned? He just lied to millions of her viewers. Was Talese expecting to be served a cup of tea? Oprah had a responsibility to her audience, a concept Talese has no understanding of because she either has no respect for journalistic ethics or is too insecure to admit her mistakes. Oprah by contrast had the courage, integrity and intellect to rise to the occasion.

Then call a local appliance store that sells GE products and tell the person you will not buy any GE products from their store until they can convince the GE CEO to convince George W Bush to end the war.

Tough questions - Yes ..... But she flat out blamed the publisher. Oprah is 100% responsible for endorsing that book to millions. She should have checked him out herself.

It's Nan's job to fact check the book, not the responsibility of a book club that wants to enjoy some afternoon reading. And Oprah did take 100% responsibility and admitted she was absolutely wrong. Nan on the other hand is still too intellectually dishonest and insecure to admit a mistake. She ends the video by saying it's not a lie. Oprah has moral, ethical, and intellectual integrity combined with the courage to look Frey & Nan in the eye on live TV and hold them accountable.

"It's Nan's job to fact check the book"
-This is not mandatory. Most publishers rely on the honesty of the Authors.
"Oprah did take 100% responsibility and admitted she was absolutely wrong."
-she admitted it was wrong for inferring on Larry King that it was ok for James to make alterations in the book. She didn't admit she was wrong for endorsing the book. She blamed that on the publisher.
How could Nan ...( 2 months ago by crispflava)
How could Nan Talese be too dumb to realize she would be asked questions about the book when she went on the show? It's the job of the media to ask tough questions & it's the job of the publisher to fact check a book. And if James Frey is too much of a sissy to handle to a few tough questions on a ladies chat show, how does he expect us to believe he's the tough guy he describes in his books?

I can't stand Oprah but I did gain a lot of respect her when she had the guts and smarts to confront both Frey and Nan Talese on live TV and hold them accountable. Oprah is wasting her talents as a talk show host, she'd make a great journalist. Talese is in way over her head as an editor; the woman's too incompetent to fact check, too dumb to differentiate fact and fiction, & is still in denial years later.

I love it! James Frey thought he could lie to the soccer moms and get away with it, and Oprah grabbed him and his publisher by the ear, dragged them on live TV and beat the living crap out of both of them! You can fool some of the people some of the time, but if you fool us soccer moms, Oprah will kick your balls up to your eye balls.
