Chronological sequence:
DMC 3 > DMC 1 > Anime > DMC 4 > DMC 2
Actually DMC 2 is the only one kinda diff. of the others, it shows a Dante who is not cocky and silent. Nevertheless he's sill awesome in all series ;)

vergil fought mundus, lost, and mundus enslaved him. dante didnt use yamato in dmc1 because he didnt have it when vergil went to hell. and dante was pretty epic in dmc1. sent a motorcycle flying with bullets, climbed up through alastor, beat mundus' best agents with little effort. mundus was the only real challenge, since he was the emperor of the underworld, but dante still kicked his ass
