I don't know what happened to them. I searched for them myself shortly after making this video, and I couldn't find them. I guess maybe they realized what a chore they'd let themselves in for and withdrew their material. But I felt it was worthwhile to leave my own video up anyway.

Unfortunately, it does seem at times that other national cinemas are determined to out-Hollywood Hollywood, rather than developing distinctive alternatives.

Thanks for this video! You said a lot of the same stuff I've been thinking these past couple of years... It also gave me the confidence to just get started! Getting an HV20 next month. The internet if overpopulated with 'mainstream' film sites. Do you know where I could learn more about film history/techniques? Thanks;)

I recommend "Film History: An Introduction" and "Film Art: An Introduction" by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. Both books are valuable in themselves, but also have excellent bibliographies that should point you in other directions.

Sir thank you very much. I'd been worried about making my mark in the industry and hearing what you've said my lack of cookie cutter training should do well. I am going to view your videos constantly and combine these wonderful tips along with my scriptwriting to make something that will stand out. Thank you very much you've earned a subscriber, a fan, and a thank you.

So in other words, the reason movies suck are because they were made by film school grads? what sense does that make. That's a fucking lie. DON'T MISS LEAD PEOPLE. There's plenty of directors who make horrible movies that never went to film school. you don't have an advantage over anyone because you didn't go to film school the same way you wouldn't have an advantage if you did.
Telling people that ...( 3 months ago by wgoodson88)
Telling people that they shouldn't go to film school so that they will be different is misleading. If nobody went to film school, then wouldn't everyone still be the same. In the end you will end up telling people to go to school so that you won't be like everyone else.

wgoodson88 "If nobody went to film school, then wouldn't everyone still be the same".
I don't think you thought this statement through. What is the logic behind your thinking?. If there were no restraints on the craftsman how would everyone be the same?.

Struck a nerve?. I think someone went to film school and found out that you can't institutionalize any form of creative art. If you let your anger flare over someone who has a different opinion, than why should anyone take yours seriously?.

Bruce Lee was frustrated with the limitations placed upon the martial artist; limitations set in place by the formality --- the "fixed positions" mentality --- that resulted from traditional training. He stressed a dynamic approach to martial arts, just as this gentlemen is stressing a similar methodology for film making. The "untethered by dogmatic thinking" approach. Makes perfect sense.
You have to learn ...( 3 months ago by wgoodson88)
You have to learn the rules before you can break them is advice I would give any aspiring filmmaker. No film school student has an advantage and people who didn't go to film school have an advantage either. Are you really saying otherwise? I'm just a student. You seem like you've been in the business for thirty years. Why would someone with your expertise and experience be making really long videos of yourself on Youtube. One would think you'd be a little more busy.

Yes, it's hard not to conclude that mainstream film making has been reduced to a very elaborate, very expensive and not terribly interesting paint-by-numbers exercise.

actually, i just think that the hundreds of remakes that's been coming out lately pretty much speak for themselves. and i'm kind of curious: could the recent political climate have anything to do with that or not? there was another program on here that brought that issue up, and i think it's slightly possible too, but more or less, it's due to a lack of imagination.
The current ...( 2 months ago by chastash)
The current political climate most definitely contributes, although I don't want to put too much emphasis on the details of this or that administration. The *real* political problem is the pursuit of popularity at all costs. Combine that with unapologetic greed, and you get a general cultural vacuum. It's not just the movies, after all, that are rotting.
There will always ...( 2 months ago by chastash)
There will always be a market for anything of quality and distinction. The problem is for people with tastes for such materials getting over the hangup that just because they like something outside the mainstream does not make them elitist. Or that even if they *are* elitists, that to wallow in the popular just because it is popular is the height of condescension.
I don't think you thought this statement through. What is the logic behind your thinking?. If there were no restraints on the craftsman how would everyone be the same?.
