Ted Kennedy recently appeared on the radio show of an illegal immigration activist who orchestrated the L.A. march last year. We are a nation built on immigration. We should welcome in an expidited fashion all those who seek to come to America after background screening, and who seek to become PART of the American culture and fabric.

I don't care a whit about skin color. I care about American values and culture. That is what made America great. You are just an ignorant person, and a racist. You cannot allow yourself to think outside of the color of someone's skin.

Here's the truth. People have always come to America to BE Americans while certainly retaining respect for their heritage. The Irish did not come to recreate Ireland. Your heritage FLAVORS the soup in the melting pot, it should not BECOME the soup.

Although well intended, your speaking only in half truth. For instance, When the original Italians immigrated to America they identified themselves only as Italians. This still exists, the only difference today is that many Italians identify themselves as Italian Americans. You see, "Italian" first, "American" second. Some groups are proud of their national heritage while others pride American patriotism. Because their Americans in America they can do that.

There is a difference between ethnic pride and isolating yourself from your American community. Irish-American, Italian, Korean...whatever. They key is making THIS land your HOME, while celebrating your heritage. NOT trying to convert this nation into what you left in the first place.

Did you ever hear of the term white flight? Whenever Hispanics celebrate their heritage, or throw festivals, or listen to music, etc. whites cowardly flee to the suburbs. The KEY solutuion then is INTEGRATION, but are whites really interested in integrating with other races? If they are, tell me then, why is America more segregated today than 30 years ago? Think about it.

Cowardly? Nah. Travel the country to find affluent minorities in those same suburbs. The first generation of immigrant lives in poor city neigborhoods. Their kids "move on up." The grandkids live in the suburbs.

I'm aware of those affluent minorities around the country, and I agree with you that ethnic groups eventually move up the economic ladder. However, only a fraction of them do relocate to the suburbs since America still remains segregated.

I think segregation is a different debate. Humans, throughout history, and by their very nature, tend to segregate themselves by ethnicity, religion...tribal affiliation. You choose to live where you are comfortable. YES, SOME segregation is remains as a result of our unfortunate past. Much is a result of being human.

I just can't come over to your side on this. Indeed, there is racism in the US. But, there is incredible "classism" in Europe. Tribes of the same religion, but different sects slaughter each other worldwide. Moreover, I still believe in "affluent" flight rather than white flight. The US ain't so bad compared to elsewhere. You wanna feel like second class? Move to an Asian country!

I guess you rely too much on media telivision when you advised me to "move to Asia." How silly. Just remember that all who were born in the United States, regardless of their ethnic background, possess the fundamental right to certain freedoms. If I choose to speak Spanish all day, every day, I can do that. Why? Because I live in a country that gives me that right. Period.

Well I'm speaking English now, ain't I? I guess you don't get my point. Most Hispanics speak English (with the exception of illegal immigrants) but "choose" to speak Spanish. It's only natural. I hope that doesn't offend you.

My comment, besides that Ted's singing qualifies as a torture devise, is LEGAL immigration is fine, the number of legal immigrants allowed in per year is the established number our country can assimilate, not applying for legal citizenship is cheating, & no one seems to address the issue of the tsunami of people crossing our border, reproducing at the rate that forced them to leave their native countries-- which could not support their huge growth in popultion. Pop. growth is bad 4our planet!

many very successful countries have a plurality of official state languages. spanish was here first. english is a secondary language for many of the legal citizens in my state. why should new mexico or arizona, or texas, or california have to change because new england has a stick up it's culo? es
