Jamesj1992. You need to get your facts straight too. These bodies are actually Chinese Prisoners who were executed. They did not consent to have their bodies disected or displayed for all to see. If you don't believe me, check out the disclaimer on the first page of the NYC Bodies Exhibit web site. Then you will see that your comment was way off base.

you are right that they don't just walk into a graveyard and dig up some random, rotting bodies to disect. They actually get them by executing chinese prisoners whose bodies went unclaimed. They people that were shown in these exhibits did not give their consent to be preserved and shown all over the world for people to gawk at.

I saw this in Hot Springs, Arkansas 2 months ago and I have to say that it was both cool and creepy at the same time. Some of the bodies looked fake to me but when you get up close to the heads you can see the eyelashes and everything. It was interesting none the less. I would recommend the exhibit to everyone out there. It is really cool.

A popular restaruant (now gone) near where I grew up used to have a 100 year old Smithfield ham on display in a glass case at the point where patrons would wait to be seated. Although simple salt was the preservative in that particular case, it nonetheless demonstrates how flesh can be preserved with chemicals to last an indefinite period of time. Of course some of those exibits, such as lung and capillary structures, are actually reproduced and molded by a process of liquid plastic injection.

But to more accurately answer your question, bullsnakegal, the bodies are thoroughly preserved with a chemical process which virtually prevents the onset of decay. If, however, decay does eventually happen, I am sure they would indeed find a replacement. And that would not be terribly difficult. If you have ever visited any medical schools, you would find that most of them have such cadavers on hand for students to dissect and examine, & there is an industry which supplies them for that purpose.
