I'm a classical musician and love Bach in his original. But I venture that Bach would not be opposed to this treatment. It's actually a tribute to his universality that he survives improvisation. He was after all a consumate improviser as were all the Baroque composers.

I actually don't mind Vanessa Mae's version. However, (I'm not being a 'purist' here) I do agree that if you want to here a REAL violinist you should listen to someone like Maxim Vengerov or Sarah Chang.

I like how everyone's bashing Vanessa Mae when they wouldn't be able to play the violin even a quarter as good as she plays it. She's a musical genius, and although I personally do prefer the original version, we should remember that as others have stated, Bach was an amazing improver. Classical music is not easy to play, so props to her for at least putting to light a generally unknown genre.
