ok. listen up people (WHO HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE AND ARE JUDGING IT BY THIS ONE SCENE)!!
Judy's character "ran away" and is trying out for a spot in this club thingy. so she paints herself up and watever so that she looks like someone else. i mean, hell, if ur gonna change who u are, y NOT change ur skin color? but, yes, she was only "black" for this scene. IN ABSOLUTELY NO WAY did Judy mean to be "rascist" or hurt peoples feelings.
so cool it people. seriously.
then why was her ...( 3 weeks ago by writerchick94)
then why was her mouth the only thing not painted. it seems racist and like they are making fun of black people. you dont have to be a bitch about it though. i havent seen the movie, i never said i've the movie, i just asked if someone could clearify that for me. and it may have been appropriate for the time period to dess up as a black person to make people laugh but having black slaves was also appropriate at one time so excuse me for being affended.
they werent making ...( 3 weeks ago by zuk1babe)
they werent making fun of them. everyone has a stereotype, and big lips just happen to be a stereotype of black people. and i wasnt being a bitch; its just the way u took it. i wasnt really even talking to u, i was talking to everyone in general WHILE answering ur question. but seriously, its just a joke, no need to be offended in the first place. and there was really no need to bring up slavery; thats WAY off topic, theres absolutely no comparison here

She's so quick and expressive. I love it when she pantomimes the lady 'playing bridge all night' . She's quick as lightening with her expressions and gestures.
Of course she ...( 2 weeks ago by trhelgoth)
Of course she didn't mean it to be racist, she was like 10, and she was a child actress with zero creative control). Context wise (i.e. the time this was made) I think this was actually an attempt towards a push against racism. Seriously, think about the time that this came out. Yeah, if this came out today it would be horribly racist, but considering the time period, this would have been viewed as a moment in favor of anti segregation. Racism is still a plague, may be a long road to a cure.

I didn't know Judy Garland played Black Face. The song is cool, the singer is great but I wish she sang it as a White girl and not Black face. Anyway, Judy was great.
Black-face is ...( 2 weeks ago by Vengeance509)
Black-face is deservedly insulting now, and it was cheap & cheezy then, but it was the 30s and 40s and not a form of racism overtly *intended* to hurt. It was a lame, archetypical racism.
Actors did as they were told. Were the black actors who played minstrelsy slaves in Gone With the Wind racists? Hardly.
Thankfully, people learn and move on, even from these more unintentional "degrees" of racism. 50 years from now, anyone who plays a thug or a rapper in a movie will be called r acist.

i loved this movie! its interesting how far we've all come....still a long way to go, but at least ppl don't do black-face anymore. she played her role beautifully like always. and yes, the time frame made this OK..but unlike today, actor's then didnt have a say in what they wanted to do. where ever the money came from they did it without hesatation. thanks for putting this up ^_^ I LOVE JUDY GARLAND

she was more like FIFTEEN.lol this came out in 1938 and she was born in 1922 xD
lol
but you're absolutely correct about the segregation thing. i really dont think were EVER gonna have a cure for racism. lol i know thats a REALLY great way of thinkin of it, but seriously. we have NO reason to be rasicist now; slavery is over and has been for years and years. i dont see any excuse for it.
lol i also like how you brought in "creative control" xD

Well with all due respect that tradition of black face stems directly from slavery. The white ring around the mouth symbolizes big lips, caused in part by disipline methods used during slavery. There is no excusinng this kind of thing, but it's interesting to look back now. We should continue to watch things like this to remind us where we've been as a country and how far we have to go.

hm...true. i spose u got a point there.
all im really trynna get across is that i think people are being a little too personal about this little clip, thats all.
Judy NEVER EVER meant to hurt anyone's feelings and im sure she would be very sad if she knew that she had.

We should watch this because Judy is amazingly talented, this is history, and look how far we have COME.
There hasn't been slavery for over 100 years because this country got rid of it.
