Bireli is the man. I just prefer Joe over Bireli, but I still warship both of them. They're two of my idols.
I don't think either of them are as creative as Mclaughlin though. He is a true genius in every sense of the word. An absolute GOD.

I just read a comment from 4 months ago where somebody is trying to say that John isn't as much of a genius as Bireli because John was schooled and Bireli wasn't. The only schooling of music John has ever had was from his mother who taught him piano, and a little Violin. He is a self taught guitarist, he might have learned some things from some other guitarists along the way, but if anybody has had schooling on guitar it is Bireli who grew up in a family of Gypsy Jazz players.

I think sometimes John McLaughlin plays to much...I mean, its his style to play this superfast notes, but sometimes he plays really to much... this is not one of this cases... they are simply amazing... I personally love Bireli, he's probably my favorite guitarist, but also McLaughlin plays really amazing in this tune... All Blues, man...

Mclaughlin looks like the evil witch of the west with that maniacal gaze staring down Birelli. Kinda creepy. Maybe he puts on that frozen smile 'cause he's actually kinda nervous, like how chess masters try to pysche out their opponents by staring them down. Birelli seems pretty cool and pleasant through the whole thing, however.

This was such an interesting meeting of titans, that I started transcribing Bireli's solo, for my ebook of transcriptions. A lot of people have asked what is that 'outside' riff that cascades up the neck. It's a whole tone riff over the D7 Eb7 change. The idea is simple but mastering the sweep only comes with time. I didn't transcribe John's solo, so can't make a comparison between approaches . If anybody else has, perhaps we can do a swap and come back with an analysis.

I don't think McLaughlin was a wee bit worried being that I've watched all the DeLucia, McLaughlin duets and the Trio and Supertrio vids rewinding them repeatedly to analyze,them, and being that my conclusion is that on most of the pieces DeLucia dominates ultimately, but on some McLaughlin does, but being that neither LaGrenne or DiMeola dominate any of them and Larry Corryel is just out classed by all of them. I actually feel a little sorry for that schmoozer.
