He was a great ... ( 2 months ago by musicwriter83)
He was a great player but not a true musical genius. That title is reserved for the composers, of which he was not. In fact, I think his playing itself was overrated. I'm reminded of a performance of his of the 3rd mvt of the moonight. It was quite awful.

gg Did in fact compose he Was a musical genius (as far as a lessser being (me) can fairly judge on it ;) ) no-one is equally good at all tasks: gg feeled out of sync with beethoven (by his own testimony) i have been hearing pollini doing the Transcendental recently and found myself Pained close to the border of crying out loud

*genious* does not equal GOD (it is a problematic (and frought!) notion anyway ...somuchgranting) his playing was highly idiosyncratic he was certainly more of an independent artist than the usual interpret (is allowed to be!)

if you find him overrated, you are possibly to much relying on a formal education with all the do-s and dont-s so be it or be it not that gould was true to Bach: he created(!) something INTRIGUEING in his own right (!) which has still (very!) much to do with *Bach proper* go hear the webern attempt on the musical offering isn't that E L U C I D A T I N G ?

". . .not a true musical genius. That title is reserved for the composers . . ." Q: Who placed the reservation? A: The composers. There just MIGHT be some bias in the point of view. Certainly musicians at the time the idea began to be promoted protested the idea.
Genius is a silly ... ( 2 months ago by goldencricket)
Genius is a silly word anyway. Intelligence, creativity, ability, are all relative. I think that Schubert was a genius, but to Mozart he was just a talented composer. Stephen Hawking is a genius to me, but to Einstein, he's only another brilliant physicist. To quote Einstein, "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish."
Certainly, there is ... ( 2 months ago by musicwriter83)
Certainly, there is a time and place for that word. I have always been very musically prodigious. If I compare myself to Mozart, who is a monument of the musical mind, who is very, very clever indeed, then where do I stand? Among the millions of musicians that ever lived, surprisingly few come to mind as being the geniuses. In the past century, we have had great musicians, but no one has proved to be the 'next Beethoven' or the 'next Mozart.' We're due for another great composer.

I always come back to this. Gould's rendition of the Prelude is amazing, can't find any better version. He just makes it hop and dance so graciously and yet it is a serene, majestic moment... simply mind-blowing. I've actually helped "initiate" a friend who knows nothing of classical music with this video, to start explaining and "teaching" things about Bach (and exquisite, excentric pianists too :-)).

the well tempered clavier is the best music you can ever learn piano or harpsichord with. Bach thought of absolutely everything, every movement you have to learn on a clavier are here, and the music is so beautiful, so simple to listen to. Bach is the greatest of the great

I have been playing Bach and listening to Gould for 30 years and still I am just stunned to see him play. A major Book 2 this is I think. Just perfect, I don't know another musician that I say that about. Glenn is 48 or 49 here, close to his death. this video shows him at the height of his powers. who are other people to tell someone how Bach should be played? do you know that when the WTC was released by Gould 8 at a time, they all shot up to #1 on the charts?to be this great and popular too?

Thanks trevjr. I wasn
´t aware of that. Yeah I think this is from the second book. I´m completely fascinated by his startling dynamic shifts and unexpected ornaments and exstreme fluctuation in tempo. Many passages that are traditionally played legato, GG plays staccato, adn vice versa, adn where several notes are to b
e struck simultaneously as in a chord, he often plays them successively in a quick arpeggio. Briiiiiliiiant.

Typical isn't it. Tell me, trevjr, do you see the difference between you and dizygotegemini? He comments on the music, purely on the music and how Glenn Gould executes THE MUSIC. You, like any other obsequious, brain dead, idolizing ignoramus cannot even think of thinking for yourself and simply recites like any performing parrot an eulogy for a great thinker, Glenn Gould. Ironic; this is the sheer ironic decadence of what aesthetics has come to.
