"In a time of myth and legend, an undead specter is haunting the land and stalking its people. After a long search, a lone young wizard has cornered the abomination in the wild and directly challenges its black magic in an effort to banish the monster from the realm."
So here you have pure homegrown produced movie in every sense of the word. Shot, edited, produced, directed, and starring ME. I made this in the desert outside my town in the summer of 2002, mainly to prove that I could do it, to prove that I could make my own fanfilm and match wits with the bi
g boys (this was back before Youtube was anything more than a wild fantasy, and you could still count amateur productions on the Internet on two hands). This was uploaded at the time to the cinema board of a UK based movie enthusiasts hub, where hundreds of movie makers shared films created with a
particular brand of FX software, and on that forum its been downloaded over 14,000 times. Most of the FX here were created with that software "Amateur Light and Magic," but there's also much to be said for simple reversed footage. ;) Some items of note: -It was shot over a period of 4 months, as I
knew how it started before I figured out how to end it. I figured I would just shoot what I knew and figure the rest out later (as a result you can see the undergrowth change color throughout the movie). - Yes, I did it ALL myself, up to pressing REC on the camcorder and then running into frame t
o act out my part. - Not a single original sound remains. Everything was dubbed over in post (courtesy of my wide selection of horror sound effects). - The only spell effect that survived every single storyboard and reshoot was the Flying Sword of Black Magic (Mordenkainen's Sword for the D &D literate), an effect I was going to MAKE work even if I couldnt make it work. Acting it out was easy, but it took over a dozen separate renders in the software to get it exactly right (by comparison, the two shots with the flaming skull took only 3 TOTAL).
- And yes, I do play both roles (surely you noticed that at no time is the villain and protagonist on the screen at the same time? ;) )
For the completionist, the opening crawl here isnt the same one I uploaded those many years ago. Back then I succumbed to Excessive Exposition-itis and gave it a full 60 seconds overload. Heeding the cries of my fans, this is the lean and mean version. So watch and enjoy! This is the origin o
f the "MUSE" in my name. Those rubber monster gloves? You didnt notice them in my production logo before every one of my new movies? Go watch, and you will... (Now you know the rest of the story.)

Well since I have never played Everquest I get to call foul. ;) 1) What is with your prejudice against Everquest? and 2) Whens the last time you saw LIVE ACTION Everquest? For the record I can answer that for you (never), and if you can do any better I would love to see it. "Sucked," is a word best saved for babies, vacuum cleaners, and 7th graders.

This movie is good. Very good special visual effects. I am interested in the spells in this movie. Is One of the spells in this movie called "Mordenkainen's Sword"? Is One of the spells in this movie called "Flame Arrow"? Is the spell killing the lich called "Disintegrate"?
MORDENKAINEN'S ... ( 2 years ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
MORDENKAINEN'S SWORD!!!!!! Give the man a cigar. You absolutely nailed it. On the other forums I have posted a list of the spells I was trying to visualize, and Mordenkainen is on top of the list. Bravo. 7th level Magic-User, in the Player's Handbook.
CONTINUED As for ... ( 2 years ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
CONTINUED As for the others, the red electric arrows were my version of "Magic Missile" for lack of a better spell. The lich uses Portable Hole, Ray of Enfeeblement, Lightning Blast, a generic "Summon Volcano", not that we can forget his "GATE" of a high level undead, and his "Dimension Door" to pop out of trouble.
Continued The Hero ... ( 2 years ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
Continued The Hero uses a Rod of Absorbtion (which overloads), to cast a fireball, and has a Wand of Force (modified into a Wand of FLAMING Force) which he uses for its sword and its Force Projectile. At the end he uses telekinesis, and everything else is generic magical blasts. Until the end that is, when he is a victim of "Possession" or "Magic Jar", depending or how you look at it. Thank you for watching and pass it along.

So cool, fantastic job! Amazing! I loved it, probably because it was so on point with all the DnD magic! You rock, the muse I ever chase, and ever lose.

The program was Amateur Light and Magic version 2 (Hense renamed to FXlab, available for download at www.fxhome.com) That D&D cartoon was EXACTLY what I was trying to duplicate. Glad to see it worked. ;)

For a spell caster, ... ( 9 months ago by CanadianWolverine)
For a spell caster, you sure have some high saving throws. Lots of counter spelling going on it looked like. To bad your spell caster didn't find the "soul container" (phylactery?) of that lich first, eh? Though, I'm not familiar with a spell that could twist the hero like that, charm, domination, and possesion don't do that as far as I know. ... Hehe, listen to me go on, I don't even like playing spell casters, monks are my cup o'tea.
PHYLACTERY! Thats ... ( 9 months ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
PHYLACTERY! Thats the word. Yes I should have found it first, and maybe run into the 12 Invisible Stalkers he would have had guarding the thing. ;) Well no one said that killing a Lich was easy. I went in there armed with every magic weapon I had (Rod of Absorption, Wand of Force), but sometimes you have to fork over the money for a Staff of Disintegration. Serves me right for being cheap. ;)
Hehe, I would ... ( 9 months ago by CanadianWolverine)
Hehe, I would hardly call a spell caster cheap! They have it the worst when it comes to the prices you have on stuff. If anyone is cheap, its my monk, I practically give away loot, I have fist and feet still, so I always go armed. ;) 12 Invisible Stalkers?!? I think your your DM had in it for you, eh? So, a few questions for you: sorcerer or wizard? Did the character have high saving throws? What dark spell turned you into the lich?
He was a wizard, ... ( 9 months ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
He was a wizard, 12th level. What business did he have taking on a Lich of at least 18th? Well, he was idealistic. And he was almost right. The spell at the end was first CONTINGENCY, set up that, whenever he was killed, to cast a possession spell on whoever killed him. Which spell? Isnt there one called POSSESSION? But at the time I just considered it a MAGIC JAR. The lich then polymorphs back into a scary form.
As for saving ... ( 9 months ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
As for saving throws, well he obviously failed the Magic Jar, and got pelted with the Lightning as well. But other than that his Rod (Or staff) of Absorption caught one spell, then overloaded on the rebound. Then he parried all the two-attacks per turn of the Mordenkainen's Sword and that was it. The Lich was doing all the defense (and kept rolling modified 20's). The Hero then made all his Dex checks at the end to avoid the Fire. Complicated game huh. ;)
Not really that ... ( 9 months ago by CanadianWolverine)
Not really that complicated, its just not often I hear of a wizard with a high reflex or fortitude save, but I suppose you could have done some preparation spells before the big showdown, which no doubt the lich would have detected all that magic. Though you could say its complicated when fighting for my monk characters is only barely more that "Did I hit the monster, dur..." =) Were the "Grail Guys" the rest of your party leaving you to hang?
I was using the ... ( 9 months ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
I was using the Grail guys to flush the lich out. I knew he was in that area and knew the other guys would blunder into him and the Lich wouldnt be able to resist some fun at their expense. Once he identified himself in the open, I made my move. The Grail Guys didnt know I was there. Such a marvelous backstory. Maybe I should right it down somewhere. ;)

Holy cow. This video real freaks you out. Stunning visuals, totally original, and great effects. I especially like how energy is changed and bounced around. It seems very believible. fantastic!
Thank you. ;) ... ( 6 months ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
Thank you. ;) The "bounce" is specifically how I wanted it. Magic is supposed to be fluid and changeable, and nothing wastes it more than a magic fight that treats its wizards like starships, just blasting away aimlessly with no imagination at all. Magic is a tool to wizards, especially to Liches, and it flows thru them like water of a ducks back. I wanted that element in here above all else. For trivia's sake, the magic sword fight took me about 12 different times thru the FX machine. ;)
I'd love to make a ... ( 6 months ago by SpreadingtheMuse)
I'd love to make a sequel to this and have the whole thing planned out in my head, but I need at least 5 more actors this time, and they're in short supply around here. :( But if you're curious, the new blue-eyed Lich discovers that his newest victim had friends, friends who arent afraid to take him on and release the hero of the first movie (he's still in there somewhere, but now all his magical imagination has been grafted unto the lich, making the lich more vicious than ever).

Hey! I actually remembered to watch it this week! Magic in D&D is confusing, but when you get it down, it's fun.
