The videoclip era didn't begin with the obnoxious M. Jackson and MTV. The Duke is The Duke. By the way, does anyone know who the gorgeous girl is?

I think her name is Fredi Washington. I liked the comment that you made luicarr. There's just no sense of history and tradition anymore in the music industry. People say Michael Jackson is the King of Pop and Music. Well these people obviously don't have the nerve and patience to go beyond the time that they're living in. Ellington is indeed a genius and I'm happening to be reading BEYOND CATEGORY: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington by John Edward Hasse.

This clip was indeed cutting edge for its time because at least here Blacks were portrayed somewhat more positively. Ellington was a genius and a man ahead of the times that he was living in. He didn't want to be confined in a category by music or race. He just had that magical charm that was rarely seen by Black entertainers that led him into opportunities that very few Blacks at the time engaged in. It's almost as if his life were a fairy tale.

this and symphony in black are pretty damn genius.
i've always loved duke ellington for the way he played piano plus he was a composer, but to see that dude was doing films too ? wow!
these are literally like an extended video of today.
as a piece of film i'd say they were rather ahead of the curve, too.

Hi the dancer is indeed Fredi Washington. She is my great-great Aunt. The USPS just put out a stamp to celebrate vintage black cinema and this movie is one of the stamps! Go out and buy! Rest in Peace Aunt Fredi we miss you!
