During a lunar eclipse the moon falls into the Earth's shadow. However, because of the Earth's atmosphere, some of the Sun's light does get through around the edge of the Earth. The atmosphere scatters blue light more than red and therefore the redder wavelengths of light from the Sun come through the Earth's atmosphere, and fall on the moon during a lunar eclipse. Therefore the moon looks red.
