I'm just waiting for the FOX story where they ask, "Will McCain blame democrats, liberals, gays, defenders of the Constitution, MoveOn, bloggers, Americans who want the US out of Iraq, the New York Times, and Muslims first?"
"Blame America First" isn't a term that comes from actual journalism — it's a slogan created by the republican slime machine to somehow portray democrats as "un-American", despite the inescapable fact that DEMOCRATS ARE AMERICANS. Since when do republicans get to define what an American is? It r
eminds me of when Bill Maher asked why the perception persists that the South is where the true Americans and patriots live when the South is the only part of the United States that actually tried to secede from the United States?
Republicans blather on and on about "personal responsibility", but
they refuse to take any "personal responsibility" when the government they elected does something terrible in accordance with their wishes. Republicans take no responsibility for electing the Worst President in History twice. They take no responsibility for supporting Bush's disastrous policies, th
en deny that there is any connection between those policies and their results.
And to say that democrats somehow don't celebrate the positive things about America is completely illogical — unless you've been convinced by the right wing that democrats want to destroy the country they live in, as
well as themselves and their families. It's an idiotic notion. I am the child of two immigrants, so I have benefited from the virtues of this country in ways that most Americans can't even understand. But that doesn't mean I abandon the right to be critical.
Republicans want America to be God and m
ommy, with Americans playing the role of worshippers/babies who have neither the right nor capacity to question, analyze, or improve the object of their worship.
Democrats see America for what it is: you, me, and everyone around you. You can love a person with all your heart and still be frustrate
d, disappointed, and even angry at that person. You can love someone while accepting that they are not perfect, beyond reproach, or eternally righteous. You can love someone while recognizing that they make mistakes and bad decisions. Anyone who has ever had a parent, sibling, family member, close f
riend, or significant other understands that. And if you really love someone, you recognize her mistakes and bad decisions, aren't afraid to call her on them, and are willing to help her overcome them if she wants your help.
There's a big difference between love and worship. America needs citizens
who love their country, not ones who worship it.
