JUDY GARLAND "GET HAPPY"
Though it's called Summer Stock, this marvelous "let's put on a show" musical - the final one that showcased the peerless pair of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly - is a delight for all seasons. The story is simple: a homespun farm family allows a Broadway production company to rehearse its new show on
their property - if the performers "pay" their way by pitching in with all the farm chores! But the pleasures are abundant: a show-stopping, all-star "Battle of the Dances" that starts out as a square dance and blossoms into a cavalcade of high-stepping dance favorites; Kelly's marvelous song and l
ater dance to "You, Wonderful You;" four of the most popular comedic screen actors ever: Phil Silvers, Eddie Bracken, Hans Conried and Marjorie Main; and Garland's incomparable "Get Happy," a smashing sequence that's one of her peak movie moments.

It is amazing that instead of commments regarding this brilliant performer, the fantastic musical arrangement and the engaging choreography, we have this childish bickering back and forth comparing Garland to PARIS HILTON. That's like comparing a diamond to an ashtray. In the information age there is little excuse for being ignorant of one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century. Stop embarrassing yourselves, people! Whatever you think you know is what the media churned out anyway.

In the film plot, Gloria de Haven is supposed to do this number, but she falls ill and Judy Garland steps in to take her place and save the show. I always wondered what it would have been like with Gloria de Haven doing this number? Gloria plays a snooty blonde in the film and it would have been an amazing transformation to see her do this.

Personally, in comparing Mrs. Garland and Ms. Hilton, I feel that Paris exaggerates her appearence to attract other people. Judy, as unattractive as she percieved herself during the days of her youth, was a lot more glamourous and a lot more beautiful than the young heiress. Besides, Mrs. Garland will be more known for this song alone, as Ms. Hilton will be doing a porno flick giving a shameful blow-job to an equally shameful man. Who wants to see that?

I don't believe you got the point. What I was saying was that anything Judy Garland ever did (aside from her notorious drug and alcohol use) amounts far more than anything Paris Hilton could in her life. Granted. I do agree with your stance, as everyone else does, that "Judy is one of the greatest, as very few can compare!" If I want to say something shameful about Paris Hilton, as one ought to, I would have to remove Jesus from the room, because I wouldn't have a nice thing to say about Paris.

I'd have to say it was a self-esteem issue Judy had. Plus, her mind could've been altered a bit from all the drugs she was taking that early in her life, having to live up to her mother's extremely high expectations of her. The death of her much beloved father certainly didn't help. I'd say looks did matter as far as getting into movies was concerned at the time, and Judy was gorgeous, or else the studios wouldn't have wanted her, whether her voice was great or not. Biased people ruled the show.
