The Marvelettes gave Motown its first number one single on the Billboard charts, "Please Mr. Postman." The group had two lead singers (Gladys Horton and Wanda Rogers) and a raft of writers and producers from beginning to end. Whether it's the early raucous 60s (Gladys) or the more polished mid-decade material (Wanda, with Smokey Robinson writing and producing), the Marvelettes had a charm that continues to earn them devoted new fans throughout the world.

Opening photo: Wanda, left; Gladys, right bottom; Katherine (Anderson) Schaffner, top. Katherine sang backup vocals. There's one song, "Need for Love," where the backup vocals are mixed poorly and Katherine's vocals overpower the lead. It's almost a duet. lol. Katherine did co-write a song for Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Wanda Rogers on lead here. The Marvelettes had two great leads. Gladys did most of the lead in the early Marvelettes days such as Mr Postman, Playboy.

According to "the mainstream market" this song was not a big hit, but I tell you the truth, you heard it all over Washington DC that year. I was only 8 then, but that song got plenty of play, and if you had a party U had to have this record. One of thier best songs ever!
The Talkingheads ... ( 1 year ago by metromonthly)
The Talkingheads did an African music-influenced album called "Remain in Light" in 1980. The third cut, "The Great Curve," had vocals arranged in an African call-and-response style. The bridge of this Marvelettes song is nearly identical. I know Mickey Stevenson and others were developing a more pronounced African groove with cuts like "Holding On," and but the vocal similiarities always made me take notice.

Wow, Now that's amazing. Mickey Stevenson & Ivy Hunter penned that number as well as the Spinners, "Truly Yours" & "I'll Always Love You". Thanks for sharing.

The Marvelettes was a wonderful group. They did not receive the promotion of the Supremes. They were cheated out of residuals, but I believe they did get back payments just like Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, Mary Wells and others. The thievery in Dreamgirls was real. Most young artists got cheated by all of the record companies.

Yes most of the olde stars got ripped off.But they made considerable money( thousands back then were equal to millions now)but they did not have heads for money(most didn't graduate high school)-did not invest it and lost it all.

One of the Marvelettes' best - and they had so many great ones. This one's awesome, with Wanda's towering, urgent vocals, and an irresistible hookline. Bravo, Marvelettes!
