This scene kind of reminds me of American Christians, always ready to go to war in Jesus' name, without questioning their "Christian" president's motives, or thinking about how Jesus taught us to love our neighbor.

As for the guns its artistic licence, if they were going for historical accuracy they would be brandishing spears, swords and axes, which would not have the same effect as everyone holding up a gun ready to go pwn some romans.

Judas is the only one besides Jesus that understands the absurdity of what Simon and the Zealots are doing in this scene. In this capacity, he seems to be a sympathetic figure.
