When I was a teen I was obsessed with this song. It was too late to buy it so I would try to catch it on an oldies station, never got enough of it. Then when I was vacationing in Detroit it was announced on the radio that he had died and I was so hurt. I had no one to share it with because the people I was with didn't know who is was and if they did they would not have cared not knowing him or his music.

Well, it's about a man who follows his dream of being a radio dj, never quite making it then realising what he's lost on the way....but of course by then it's too late. Like many Harry Chapin songs there's a lesson in there for all of us.

I remember his death well, he was on his way to do a charity gig,how ironic is that? A wonderful performer with some great songs, and sorely missed.

I just heard of Harry Chapin during the summer semester here in college. My art teacher played a slideshow of famous artworks to Flowers are Red. She was talking about the art, but I didn't hear a word because the song captured my attention. After class I found out who he was and have been YouTubing him ever since...grrreat music!!!

I was in tenth grade the year he was killed. My English teacher was a big fan. She talked about him for a couple weeks after. It was cathardic for her I'm sure. It helped us all deal with loss even if part of us didn't really know who he was. I was a fan of his music then and now. He seemed so tormented. I loved the way he put himself out there for all to see. So naked and vulernable emotionally. I'm sorry you had to bear your pain alone.

Wow! People still digging Harry Chapin. The first concert I ever went to was Harry Chapin, Steve Goodman and Pete Seeger with Harry's full band, It was a PAF playhouse benefit show at Huntington HS around 1973. A few years later I saw him there again and since there were no seats left my brother and I sat on the stage wing. With all the crap the republicans have gotten us into his songs are just as valid than ever. I was going to the show when I heard he had died on his way there - God bless

Yes, he was going to do a free concert at Eisenhower park the night he died - I don't know if he was on his way there or not - since the LI Expressway is pretty central to travel he could have been going anywhere but what a terrible loss.
