Let Nilsson sing a trill...oh wait, she could not. Yes, Nilsson was LOUD and had a HUGE voice. But her technique was hardly Callas' equal. (Did Nilsson EVER perform Lucia, Norma, Amina, Violetta etc.? No.)

Birgit Nilsson was definitely the better technician and that's proven by her many, many years of singing the hardest music ever (Wagner)and pretty much never missing a note. Birgit was a singing machine! But Maria's expressiveness and musicality trump Birgit's.

This was really Maria Callas farewell to her public. Anna Moffo was singing in Rigoletto on alternite nights and was Callas friend. She tells the story of visiting Callas in her dressing room, and Maria clutched her hand and said with real anguish and tension, "Anna, I just can't give them what they want anymore! I think Italian opera is the most difficult thing to sing.
Wagner's music it's big, thick ,polyphonic and therefore not designed 100% for singing.
I'm not a musician but it looks easier to sing because you are not as exposed as in the Italian style.
Nilsson great voice and technique indeed but Callas had an answer for all things in music.
For me, before anything, Callas was a musical genius in her understanding of the composer's intention,and her choice of musical material.

Claro, y por todo lo que tu dices llego a ser la m ás... (si tu quieres, una de las más grandes o al menos conocidas sopranos de la historia moderna de la ópera).
Quizas no lo sepas, pero a la Callas, se le atribuyen muchos más aportes y logros que su de por si impresionante canto (sea como lo quieras catalogar, porque eso es cuestión de gustos ).
Cualquier buen conocedor de lírica al menos mostraría respeto por la figura que representó, porque ella es un antes y un después de ésta música...
