Nah I would agree with you. He is making a gamble with Luffy. Knowing who his father and grandfather is, and his dire wanting to become the Pirate King. He pretty much gambled the fate of all pirates in Luffy's hands. Also, Shanks considers himself, along with Whitebeard and others as the original Pirates. So when he is saying he is betting on the New Age, it is the age without Whirebeard, himself, etc. Like the new era of Pirates, and Luffy shall be king! hopefully... lol

There's a couple of theories being thrown around claiming that 'haki' or 'spirit power' can negate the abilities that DF users possess.
The same spirit power that Shanks demonstrated walking up to greet WB. I think haki isn't measured by phisical power, rather, it's measuerd by the strength of the character's willpower.
