Lip service to principles kills more leaders than almost any other shortcoming, imo. Thanks.
Sadly, all too ... ( 8 months ago by TamHickey67)
Sadly, all too often senior management issue edicts from above which bear no relationship to sensible working priorities. Sometimes the "suits" should come down from their ivory towers and see just what their workforce really have to deal with on a daily basis.
I would rather ... ( 8 months ago by PalluxoMediaOfficial)
I would rather focus on the problems that work force is facing as a result of corporate greed. 51% of the United States populations have annual income less than $18,000/year. How many people are underpaid doing their office and other jobs? How many are really happy with their jobs? Why do people have to be slaves of corporations? Can you answer those questions Tom?
Where the US ... ( 8 months ago by MrRay47)
Where the US military excels is in having personnel who know when to ignore "the plan" and do what needs to be done to accomplish the mission. At my level (GS-13, CW2) that was not something that was openly discussed but everyone knew it would happen and it was essential that it would. For the personnel involved it is quite difficult to return to a non-operational situation where "the plan" is always followed. I know from my own experience. aloha :)
Tom, I am a bit ... ( 8 months ago by ogier1)
Tom, I am a bit surprised that nobody seems to have commented on your description of the USForces. You said something like they are: "bringing democracy, humanity, values" to Iraq.
But I guess to discuss this perception would be an own huge, very heated discussion...
Okay, so I was just ... ( 8 months ago by Marihani)
Okay, so I was just hearing you wrong. Glad of that, as I have you pegged as a clever guy :-)
I think the key to good management is the ability to find/choose good people to work for you. You can be a genius at planning, but it won't help if the people put to realize those plans aren't capable and resourceful.
As I'm sure you ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
As I'm sure you realize, Steve, leadership is all about situation. My example was of a leadership model that fits a situation. Thinking there is A LEADERSHIP MODEL is the first mistake. ("You Duquesnse guys"...??)
I agree completely ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
I agree completely with your first paragraph. The magnitude of challenge presented to military leders is beyond anything either of us has ever or, hopefully, will ever face. Deploying hundreds of thousands of people to accomplish millions of tasks just might require a little bit of "pigeon-holing mentality." Ask MacDonald's. This video had nothing to do with the politics that landed our military personnel in this sorry situation in Iraq.
Bingo! Find great ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
Bingo! Find great people; outline great challenges; give them the right tools; measure the right stuff; enable the right kinds of conversations; let 'em do what they think is right within those guidelines. Rough overview, but works for me. Thanks.
The example just ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
The example just popped out of my mouth within the context of people conducting operations within the framework of the intent of an overall mission. I believe commanders on the ground in Iraq are attempting to do what popped out. That mission might be fatally flawed or totally folly, but that's what I think they are trying to accomplish. Thanks.
And, Ray, in your ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
And, Ray, in your experience, how important were After Action Reviews (AARs) in disclosing the necessity for "out of plan" actions to be taken? Can we people who have never been in the military really "get" how it works inside? I don't think most people have a clue.
"Edicts from above ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
"Edicts from above which bear no relationship to sensible working priorities" says it perfectly. What I was saying here is that I think the US military is better at avoiding that kind of "suits" mentality than most of the major corporations I've worked with for the past two decades. Thanks.

Kind comments. I'll refrain from a 9/11 conversation in a 500 character medium.
Everything you say ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
Everything you say rings true to my experience. And, lost opportunities lead to skepticism-->cynicism re: leadership by employees. Vicious cycle. Thanks.

Thanks. Don't know too many other channels focusing on business. If you find some, please let me know.
No. And neither can ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
No. And neither can anyone else. Ours is an enormously complex economic system in which all of us want to maximize our returns on personal investments; global competition keeps driving costs down; natural resources are threatened, etc., etc. Now, we're headed for recession, which will exacerbate all the issues you cite. Nothing's simple.
Looks so easy when ... ( 8 months ago by Marihani)
Looks so easy when you put it in text, doesn't it? Hehe!
Been reading through the comments, many wise words. The wisest I will attempt now is: The best of luck and talent with your project! (wish I knew what it was - sounds exciting!)
Don't it ever! ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
Don't it ever! Thanks for the good wishes. It's a big company with a big ecosystem of suppliers/partners, trying to do some huge things in a very tough competitive environment. Everybody needs to work together, innovatively, as if all are from the same family. Piece of cake! ;^)
Tom, I can't ... ( 8 months ago by MrRay47)
Tom, I can't understand why all organizations would not have some sort of after action review procedure (aka "lessons learned" aka "hot wash".) As a systems analyst I knew to design in those sorts of things on a frequent basis. I had no idea that it wasn't an almost universal procedure. Live & learn. aloha :)
It's baffling to me ... ( 8 months ago by tlg847)
It's baffling to me as well, Ray. Again, people who don't know diddly about the military would be amazed by the learning mechanisms built into their systems. Rare, and I mean rare, in civilian organizations. Like I say, baffling. Aloha!!

Hi Tom,
planning and freedom...strategy and tactics
strategy should not change on a whim or be reactionary. tactics should be consistent with the strategy but can react in real time to unpredicted events. often there seems a lack of strategy leading to unguided tactical behavior without common purpose.
peace.
Can't get into bad ... ( 8 months ago by cambridgee)
Can't get into bad or stuck strategy without a scenario. If a company is in a business that changes so often that a strategy must constantly adjust, well that would be the exception to the rule. Companies that constantly change strategy don't know what they are doing. It is best keep a strategic vision and change tactics to react to changing technology or comptetitive products or customer desires.
always enjoy your vids. thx.
peace.
