It could be a wah-wah pedal, but my other guess would be intently increased depth on bass modulation. Chris Squire uses it on "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" by Yes. I used to think it was wah-wah, but I read in one of his interviews that he did it with bass modulation. Maybe the same for "The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun)."

Dictionary[dot]com defines cacophony as "harsh discordance of sound; dissonance" which this is, as was probably intentional. By "tuneless" I mean the song doesn't contain pleasing melodies, but again, that probably wasn't the intent.
Sorry if this comment is a little pedantic, but I suppose that should be no problem for you hardcore King Crimson fans. ;D
