I dont always agree with Clarkson, I do in this case because there is a limit to how much bhp should go into a front wheel drive car, and its way below 240. You don't have to be Colin Chapman to realise that.
If the Astra VXR was AWD, it would be the best car in its class. Subaru managed it with the Impreza WRX, why cant Vauxhall/Opel?

Yeah you're rihght because the VXR is far more powerful than the Golf GTI in this case. Vauxhall have had this problem with the Vectra VXR too...I hope the Insignia VXR (if there is one) will be somewhat better in that respect since Vauxhall have shown they can construct decent performance vehicles!

Vauxhall/Opel make decent vehicles all round. Most of the cars I've owned have been Vauxhalls, and my wife drives an Astra sporthatch, which like all the others, we are more than happy with it.

They do, the Insignia looks incredible and apparently it's very good to drive, I bet if they do a VXR version of that, then it will be near perfect because they already have a fantastic car to work on. The Astra is the best car in the Vauxhall range, my mum just bought a new Elite 1.8 model and it is superb. The sporthatch is one of the best looking cars on the road, Vauxhall could have rebranded it as a real sports coupe and stuck 5 grand on to the price tag and got away with it, it looks ace.
