Here's one question ... ( 1 month ago by vini8080)
Here's one question people neglect to consider when it comes to "Thing infection." Did MacReady sterilize the scalpel after each individual sliced their finger? If someone ended up cutting themselves after Palmer had done so then its entirely possible they would have been infected. Which leads me to suspect that Childs was in fact a Thing by movie's end.

That
´s a very good point vini8080 :) Never thought about that and it makes sense. There are so many things that MacReady has to think about and he´s under stress, all he wants to do is if Childs is infected that he forgets to sterilize the scalpel. Interesting theory...and it makes perfect sense. Mayb
e Childs was a Thing then.

Hell, its possible that MacReady himself could have become a Thing at, or after the movie's end; that is depending whether he cut himself after Palmer.

Fair bit of debate on that one. Some say it was his shadow on the wall when the dog-thing snuck into a room much earlier. Others think he ingested a small particle of the thing and hence was seen having chest pains not long before he is discovered to be infected.

On Outpost 31 the newest argument is that the Shadow, for 2 separate moments, bears a resemblance to Palmer. Evidently, Carpenter has gone on record saying that the shadow was of some anonymous extra.

Perhaps you can help me, I was wondering, does the Thing kill you and create a copy of you or does it invade your body, in the way that an Alien 'Chestburster' does?
Thanks, -Ian III

It "hijacks" your cellular structure completely. It doesn't just live inside it's victim, it literally becomes them. And it also carries the genetic information from every life form it ever assimilated. That's why when the Thing is out in the open, it contains elements and parts from insects, animals and humans in a strange amalgam of life forms. It is truly one of the most inventive creatures ever thought up in film.

So does it kill you and create a new form of you or does it somehow grow in your body ??? So if it kills you and turns into you it somehow has to hide the body ??

In the movie there is a short (primitive) computer animation showing how the organism assimilates the host until the original is literally replaced cell for cell. There is no corpse left behind, since you become its' "puppet"...for lack of a better word. Have you not seen the film? If not, then do so very soon. It is a tremendous psychological mystery combined with hideous tension and horror. A mentally stimulating horror/suspense film....a rare thing. Peace.

I congratulate you on your choice. You will soon own one of the spookiest, creepiest and thought provoking films ever made. Remember, it is a DEEP movie with alot going beneath the surface story, just like Robag88 says in his analysis videos, so multiple viewings are a must. I saw it in the theater when I was 9 years old.....I'm STILL recovering! Back then there was no real gore except for the slasher films. For an intelligent sci-fi film it really does blast the senses! Stunning imagery. Peace.

Yeah i watched it yesterday and i was wowed. And i think its a great thing that , there are still extremly creepy movies without gore.

i think the thing was very smart.... it figured if it assimilated clark then hed be the obvious target as u see in the movie....so instead it left clark alone

There's no telling when Palmer was assimilated, but I think a lot of what you see from him is more comic relief than anything. I wasn't aware that this movie was such a huge box office flop. What a shame. John Carpenter made some excellent movies in the late '70s and '80s.

ironically as an artist, production value isn't as important to me. what matters more to me is the concept, characterization, for reason i will usually see past week design because i know deep down they had to work with what they had, which probably wasn't much. anyway, the thing has always been my 2nd favorite horror fim (alien has the honor of no.1) you have made me nostalgic for it, and now i must go watch it again....
