Dispatches: Holy Offensive
Channel 4 21/02/2005 UK documentary looking at the clash between advocates of freedom of speech and artistic free expression, and religious groups who want their beliefs of what is sacred to be respected. 'Behzti' is a play written by the British Sikh playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti. It contains
controversial scenes in a Sikh temple, and its production in Birmingham met with violent demonstrations causing it to temporarily close. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behzti A similar controversy surrounded the production and transmission of 'Jerry Springer The Opera', a musical written by Stewart
Lee and Richard Thomas. It was actively opposed by evangelical Christian groups who protested at theatres across the UK, attempted legal action, and lobbied for it to be banned. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Springer_The_Opera 'Submission' is a 10-minute film directed by Theo van Gogh and writ
ten by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. It drew both praise and outrage over its portrayal of abused women as a criticism of Islam. On November 2nd 2004 Theo van Gogh was murdered because of his involvement in the film. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submission_%28film%29

@7:25 "Where words are used as weapons...that is NOT acceptable". In the US that is EXACTLY the function of the 1st amendment. To provide the PEOPLE a VERBAL WEAPON to remain defensive and vigilant in order to protect against an oppressive government or religion. It is better to war with words and ideas than to war with body and blood. That IS how Liberty is kept and defended - NOT with physical weapons.

As someone with ... ( 2 months ago by urukian)
As someone with Muslim family, it also worries me that it will set the precedent for viewing my law-abiding, hard-working family as pariahs who don't belong in their country. There is a fine line between freedom of speech and incitement to religious hate crime.
your family is ... ( 2 months ago by tieInterceptor)
your family is muslim, because they choose to be, if your family where NeoNazies, would you be surprised that they where treated like pariahs? religion is a choice, race on the other side, is something you can't change and does not carry any ideas with it. therefore, racism is wrong... hating Islam because is backwards and against freedoms we cherish, treats women like chattle, and is contrary to democracy... NOW, that is a right! and common sense to boot.

would you say, As someone with family who are members of the Nazy regime I feel that my law abiding hard working family members are treated like pariahs that do not belong to this country??? beeing a muslim, implys something, Implies they belive in the coran, and that sharia should be the law of the land, that Religious rule should be the only authority, and that kuffir should be killed. all that is in the Coran, if your family believes in that, then... they deserve to be treated like pariah
and I'm an atheist, ... ( 2 months ago by tieInterceptor)
and I'm an atheist, I don't like any religion. So don't think I'm against Islam in particular. I have spent the time reading the coran and haddiths, I know what happens to the 'people of the book' and what is to be a dhimmi, The Coran is very explicitly intolerant of any other ideas. So do not come telling me to feel sorry for your family, I don't have anything against nationalities, I'm an immigrant myself in England ...but I do have EVERYTHING against 7th century religious lunacy. period
I really believe ... ( 2 months ago by tommyk77)
I really believe that religion has no respectable place in modern society. People need to wake up. Just think of what we could achieve in a world without the constraints of religion!

Religion is not ... ( 2 months ago by urukian)
Religion is not entirely a choice. Religion is merely the social mores of a society. How many of you are brave enough to challenge the mores of your society? If you lived in a majority muslim country, you'd be Muslim, too. You clearly have no understanding of the complexities of human beings, or think that Muslims are not just simply human beings. With classic simplicity, you categorise people into two camps, good and evil, and with classic bigotry, take to your moral high horse.
it is a choice, ... ( 2 months ago by tieInterceptor)
it is a choice, and if you choose to defend an ideology just because it's what you where told as a kid, then that's your decision... but don't complain if we treated you like a fascist pariah for believing that the kuffar are inferior. Germans where also told to believe of themselves as the "superior race"... now they changed their mind, and feel remorse for it. do the same, cry baby
oh yes, you think ... ( 2 months ago by urukian)
oh yes, you think you're so brave, you'd probably be right up there with the extremists if you were born in a Muslim society, or a Nazi general in fascist Germany. It's always the obtuse, arrogant loud mouths who maintain the status quo. I'm breaking my back here and struggling to go against the religiously inspired mores of my culture. I'm defending Muslims like my parents because I know they're good people, probably a lot better than you.
you defend them ... ( 2 months ago by tieInterceptor)
you defend them because they are your parents, they still believe that they are superior to the kuffar, Quran, sura 3 chapter 28 Let not the believers take the unbelievers for friends rather than believers; and whoever does this, he shall have nothing of (the guardianship of) Allah, but you should guard yourselves against them, guarding carefully; and Allah makes you cautious of (retribution from) Himself; and to Allah is the eventual coming. That passage alone is pure hatred of non-muslims
if you think that ... ( 2 months ago by tieInterceptor)
if you think that being law obedient and "good people" is compatible with Islam you are in denial. the fact is that when Islam rules, the law becomes sharia, and leaving the religion is penalized by death. I'm sorry if you feel bad for your family, they probably don't take their religion very seriously, If they did they would not be living in country that has a law that is at odds with what Allah Sharia law. believing in Islam and also in a democratic free society is 100% incompatible.
to pretend that the ... ( 2 months ago by tieInterceptor)
to pretend that the Coran does not call every unbeliever as 2nd rate human beings is pure denial. if your parents believe in it, even if it's just as a de-facto cultural by product of their upbringing, is like saying that Nazism is ok, as long as you don't do too much Jew killing, and don't take it seriously. Islam is the problem, and if your parents are good people they should examine the doctrines and LEAVE the religion. As simple as that, ITS A CHOICE ! an ideology like any other.
Religion should be ... ( 1 month ago by Sacke1985)
Religion should be riduculed. If it is not it will grow to powerfull and it will resort to violance in all way's possible. Every perosn believer or non believer should put freedom of speech as there top value above all others.
Faith is nothing ... ( 1 month ago by Cyraside)
Faith is nothing more than the absolute suspension of disbelief, because without evidence you have no reason to believe, other than your willingness to. If delusion, superstitious wishful thinking, and bronze age myths weren't so popular, we'd wouldn't have issues like this. And just because something is popular, that doesn't make it right or true. The majority once believed the world was flat and it was heresy to state otherwise. Such were the glory and golden years of the church. Peace to all.
