Aranman16, you're right. This version of Christmas Steps is from Mogwai's EP + 6 album not Come Die Young, though that version is great as well, I won't say it's superior to this version but I'm not going to argue about that, it doesn't really matter. I just prefer the EP + 6 version.
Anyway I'd guess this version has been edit to be a similar length to the version on CODY because isn't the EP + 6 version about 11 minutes long?

Yeah, Mogwai recorded two different versions of Christmas Steps, tigerboy1966. There's a version on Come Die Young (That might be the one you're referring to), and a slightly different version on EP + 6 - which is playing in this video.
I don't know if they ever recorded a live version of Xmas Steps for a John Peel Session. There's a Mogwai CD - Government Commissions (BBC Sessions 1996-2003), which has some songs from John Peel Sessions. It doesn't included this song, though.

If I remember correctly, Guru Guru's "Dagobert Duck's 100th birthday" starts off quite loudly but gets softer and softer. when this happens, you switch it up and up and up but by the time you are on max volume, the buggers come in with pneumatic hammers and everything else maxed out. They have a recording of Christmas Steps for a Peel Session that was never released, it's about seven minutes long and is louder and obviously shorter. you can find a bootleg if you look about online.
