By the way, I'd like to know what "cheesy cannon menu thing" yer referin' to. If you mean the cannon crew on the menu screen... that's us! I agree I'm not pleased with the way that picture turned out, but as I recall it was a candid shot made when we were just messin' around. I'll admitt there's some farb in this movie, but sometimes ya just gotta bite the bullet and put up with it. All ya can do is make yer own impression as accurate as possible and call it good.

No offense to you fellers... the cheesy cannon menu thing had to do with the silly red cannon icon used as a pointer on the DVD. Hobby? Or History? My point exactly.

I agree that the DVD menu pages are not great, but my comments were about the MOVIE, not about the poor choice of graphics for the DVD menus! THE FILM ITSELF IS FANTASTIC, so who cares about the DVD menus? I don't know about you fellers, but I tend to skip right past the menus anyway, and get to the heart of the program!

Trailer is good, but not as strong as the full movie, which I've watched at least six times already. It's the best Civil War film since "GLORY." Campbell Scott makes an appropriately surly Ambrose Bierce, and the make-up conversion of Vivian Schilling to look like Gertrude Atherton is astounding, especially when you look see how stunning she really is on the "making of" documentary (reminds me of the transformation job of Nicole Kidman into Virginia Woolf in "The Hours"). Check it out!

If the menu isn't important, why bother including it? Why not just put a big red play button on the screen? All I'm saying is the first impression wasn't the best. The films were very good. But, the first impression (menu) wasn't. So, you're right; buy this DVD (which is quite good), IGNORE the menu and watch the films. Attention to detail?

Yup, film is out on DVD. Checkout Amazon. Really superb battle action, great acting, and of course, incredible writing from the master, Ambrose Bierce!

He resented being compared to Edgar Allan Poe. The similarities between the two are really superficial, as in Orwell and Huxley, Wells and Verne.

I agree with thekindone: Parker Adderson, Philospher is one of the best. But all of Bierce's Civil War stories are excellent. Since he was an actual Civil War veteran (in fact he fought in some of its blooiest conflicts), his stories are completely cold and realistic. There are no heroes, just victims: the protagonists always experience some form of loss - their own lives or their loved ones. Also, watch "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" (it's available on YouTube in 3 parts).
