Vera Meyer plays the Glass Armonica (aka Harmonica) in Harvard Square, Boston, July, 2005. The instrument, an invention of Benjamin Franklin, was quickly banned after its inception. It was said to provoke insanity. The unique harmonics have also been said to import theraputic powers. It is also known as the "Glass Armonica".

I believe the insanity that was caused by the instrument, back in Ben Franklin's day, was from lead poisoning - the lead leaching out from the lead crystal glassware.

i agree, no wonder it didn't catch on. Is she lying about it causing marriage disruptions (or being claimed to) and waking the dead...? it's weird, i almost sent a cd mix of crazy music to someone in a near-death coma hoping that if they listened to it would help bring him back more or osmething

It is an interesting invention, it's the same as playing a wine glass, except the bowls are suspended on a rod and turned. Maybe it needs a foot pedal to turn it?

ah yah I watched a show on it and saw a genuine reproduction. Pretty neat. I also saw a modernized one with a silent electric motor. the whole unit was relatively small.
