Vera Meyer plays the Glass Armonica (aka Harmonica) in Harvard Square, Boston, July, 2005. The instrument, an invention of Benjamin Franklin, was quickly banned after its inception. It was said to provoke insanity. The unique harmonics have also been said to import theraputic powers. It is also known as the "Glass Armonica".

I believe the insanity that was caused by the instrument, back in Ben Franklin's day, was from lead poisoning - the lead leaching out from the lead crystal glassware.

It is an interesting invention, it's the same as playing a wine glass, except the bowls are suspended on a rod and turned. Maybe it needs a foot pedal to turn it?

Perhaps a Diminished Scale? Or a Tritone. (Diabolus in Musica) For which you could be Burned by the Inquisition. But it wasn't thought to Cause Insanity, but rather, it was "the Devil in Music". Sorry. I'm in an Annoying Mood...
