You would be, very, very wrong.
Actually, it was a big hit in the US circa 1978 on this side of the Atlantic. It certainly was the biggest hit of anything Nick Lowe did in the US.

Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds are outstanding. This song is probably the nearest thing to a perfect pop song ever: tuneful, light, bouncy, and CLEVER. Nick's also a top producer of others' music--such as Elvis Costello's "Armed Forces" (1979). We need more like you, Nick!

Hmmm mixed comment--remember this to have been a moderate success in the UK.
Great song though

An awesome song/memory. I was in h.s. w/ this came out & it always put me in a better mood. I remember distinctly listening to it during football season. We had a poor team but tried hard. Rained a lot (upstate NY) but there were a few games played in the sunshine. I remember psyching myself up w/ this in the locker room just before running out w/ the team to take the field. The energy was still in my head as the scene exploded around me w/ fall colors. I remember the moment not the score, ha!

gosh, that's an awesome memory! No matter how uplifting a song is, if I associate it with a certain time period in my life, I can't help feeling a little sad. I can't help wishing I could step back in time for just the briefest of moments.
I didn't grow up with this song, for I recently discovered it, but it definitely sounds like one of those songs that'd be perfect to create memories with. That's why I love it!

Couldn't agree with you more, gmpep3, that's why I felt compelled to share my specific memory with this song. Stepping back in time can happen after you've made the good memories to begin with. They'll always be there like a good friend. Sounds like you're well advanced beyond your time. I wish you the best, friend & certainly wish you many more happy memories made in your future. Cheers!

Mmm - kinda torn between between the sentiment of that kind of music, whist I have recently seen NWA Straight Outta Compton, which I really enjoyed, I kind of feel guilty about music glorifying violence like that. But then is NWA classed as
Gangsta, or is it just old skool hip hop?. Also what are we doing discussing Gangsta rap on a Nick Lowe thread??
Weird. Over to you my friend - convince me

yeah nwa is maybe THE example of good rap that's considered "gangsta." in terms of violence, i think they're sort of a comic exaggeration playing on white fears. the music's so well-produced and the lyrics so catchy and playful, albeit violent, that its tough to believe they are the cold-blooded thugs they portray. i think some rap could appeal to nick lowe fans because of the emphasis on clever lyrics. eric b. and rakim, for example are definitely worth checking out if you haven't heard them...
