I disagree with your fundamental premise and you have failed to persuade me that the countries we have discussed could have achieved their successes other than under the auspices of a superpower. However I'm equally certain my arguments have not provided you with anything other than amusement. So I thank you for an enjoyable discussion you've been a very worthy adversary.

barb, I thank you on my behalf. It is clear, that this is not the place for a detailed discussion on the issue, but I hope, that you will look with a little more sceptical eyes on the issue in the future. Perhaps you will change your mind as I once did.
Your arguments were wellcome as a challenge to my view, I allways like to test my point of view critically - and what I have said here cannot be the whole truth. For what it is worth, I wish you all the best!

barb, we are not going to agree on the issue of the British Empire, lets leave it there. But I would have chosen the Hispanic Empire as my next choice: in spite of the welth that was brought in (read: stolen) from South America, Spain didnt really become poverful in its economy - everything that came in went out again. No colonial empires were never any economical achievement.

Spanish empire,- they dissipated stength by getting involved in a European war and never quite decided whether they were a national/imperial power or the vanguard of Catholicism (no insult to that faith intended). They lost control of the seaways, that control ending up with us and we used to greater advantage.

Not a good comparison, the German overseas empire was in large part nothing more than a trophy. Germany's essential economic interests remained continental european- eastern Europe, the Balkans and Turkey. In contrast Britain's maritime empire was economically critical.

EU is the autocratic super-state wich is governing by corrupt birocratic commisions and elites. Eu does NOT accepte the decisions and sovergnty of little european states and it`s peoples !
