THE WAR, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns.
Mobile's Maurice Bell recounts the landing at Tarawa, a tiny Pacific island, as he observed it from the deck of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. Clip from part three. For more information, visit http://www.pbs.org/thewar

tarawa was no battle, it was a riot, a street fight with high powered rifles. after the first few hours both sides were so disorganized nobody knew what was going on. the marines you see in this footage? none of them are even from the same platoons. if you survived the assault on shore you took a break behind the seawall , got with who ever was around you and started attacking in any direction you choose. lots of great books about this: the most interesting fight in the pacific in my opinion.

Read "One Square Mile of Hell", by John Wukovitz" if you would like to know what Tarawa was like. The two buddies in the book went to High School with my Grandfather. He even knew the Medal of Honor recipient William Bordelon. All High school classmates of his. He also lost a college buddy who was dive bombing a Japanese pill box on Betio island in Tarawa. I grew up hearing these stories he would tell me about Tarawa and how he lost most of his buddies on that island.
