And to the victims: we know they meant no harm to the NG - they had been too far away and on the way to their classes.
It seems to be an American heritage that someone has to pay for everything regardless of his or her persnal responsibility. EINSTEINIAN demands the same, but from the other side.
The ROTC is and has been an important institution for the recruitment of officers esp. in wartime. And taking part in the program is one of the few chances for the hopeless people to get a better education. This explains the students' anger. BTW I have learnt they stored a large amount of guns ins
ide. None was used to shoot at law enforcement (haha!)
Your analysis is correct, but by disregarding the social background of the Nixon era one will unavoidably stick to the opinion the whole issue has been a very sad form of "collateral damage". In fact, those simple minds of the NG eagerly adapted the common insult "student bums" (used by a lot of
right wing politicians) and combined it with their hatred to a class presumed to be privileged.
I'm not saying that Vietnam was a good thing or that the shootings should have happened. What I am saying, however, is that most hippies I've ever known were (and still are) laughable hypocrites, who only obtained one thing: getting arrested.
