very intelligent video, but i disagree on one point. with the older generations, perhaps u can separate the word gay meaning happy vs homosexual, but amongst the young generation (i am 23) i don't believe u can make the argument that gay or fag mean ONLY stupid/silly. yes, gay means stupid to some, but those same people use the same word to mean homosexual, surely? i don't think you can separate the 2 meanings yet. the connotations are still there

Couldn't even watch the whole thing. Spoken like a true liberal: "don't bother with facts...no one fact is better than another...that just leads to (expletive) thinking".

who gives a crap about what anyone says it's all mental masturbation. if you are afraid of gays or want to stop people from exercising their freedom of sex or speech then you should be clubbed.

I'm not offended by the word "fag", mostly because I just can't be bothered, but also because I find that to be offended by that word would give power to the person who uses it. Then there's the hoopla about how gays have "stolen" the world "gay". Gays began to use that word in order to speak of the "love that dare not speak its name". It was a code word which gays used in order to avoid mentioning homosexuality, which was illegal at the time.

(continued) I don't believe that people genuinely regret the "loss" of the word "gay" because (1) the word has not been lost, it still has its non-homosexual meanings and it is perfectly possible to read it in old poetry with full comprehension of its intended meaning, and because (2) the same people seem to be strangely indifferent to the "loss" of items like "queer" and "faggot" which have also acquired their homosexual meaning only recently.
(continued) When ...( 10 months ago by masameus)
(continued) When people argue that the word "gay" has been "stolen" by gays, it begs the question: "From whom?" The covert propaganda function of this charge of linguistic theft is obvious. It portrays the English language as the symbolic property of the heterosexual majority and gays as conniving outcasts who try to sabotage this heterosexual cultural property. It is an indirect way of saying that gays do not belong to the cultures of the English speaking peoples, that gays are outside culture.

You can only be offended with your CONSENT. Consequently, the obvious question is, why do you consent?

I personally think that words that are adapted to fit into modern day society as insults (such as fag, gay, etc) are only insulting if you allow them to insult you. I am a strict heterosexual, i don't mind talking to homosexuals, but i will admit i feel uncomfortable around them sometimes. However, when someone calls me gay i merely reply, "yes i am happy, yourself?" I deliberately use its original and proper meaning, i know several 'gays' who also now do that when they are insulted by others.
